European Integration Working Group

The Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration eV (AEI) is an interdisciplinary scientific association that has set itself the goal of dealing with questions of European integration and EU development. The current approximately 430 members of the AEI include university professors (especially law , economics and political science as well as history ) and employees of research institutes, members of various institutions and organizations whose work focuses on the field of EU integration. The AEI sees itself as the central forum for the continuous interdisciplinary analysis of questions of European integration and EU development in the Federal Republic of Germany ; it belongs to the European Community Studies Association (ECSA) together with the corresponding associations of the other EU member states .

The AEI was founded in 1969. Among its co-founders are the first President of the EC Commission , Walter Hallstein , and State Secretary Alfred Müller-Armack . The work of the AEI is funded by the European Commission .

The AEI pursues the following goals and tasks:

  • Providing information on current and fundamental issues relating to European integration as well as measures by the European Commission in the higher education sector;
  • Suggestions for scientific research as well as teaching in the field of European integration;
  • Promoting cooperation between the relevant university associations in the EU Member States and universities and academic institutions in the countries of the European Union;
  • Promotion of the exchange of views and ideas on EU-relevant issues between science and practice.

For this purpose, the working group organizes regular conferences on current issues of European integration. The working group publishes presentations and discussion reports from some of its conferences in its own series of publications , which is published by the Nomos publishing company. The quarterly magazine "integration" of the Institute for European Politics, Berlin, has been published in cooperation with the working group since 1992. In the AEI section of the journal, conference reports and communications appear primarily. The members of the working group receive the magazine free of charge.
