Jared Francisco Borgetti Echavarría (born August 14, 1973 in Culiacán , Sinaloa ) is a retired Mexican football player .

His nickname is Zorro del Desierto ("Desert Fox").

Career

Borgetti was a goal-scoring striker during his playing career and is considered one of the best headers in the world. Although he received many offers from Europe after the 2002 World Cup and applied for an Italian passport because he has Italian grandparents, he stayed in Mexico . Borgetti played for the Mexican club in Pachuca CF in 2005. After his strong performance in Germany, he was initially associated with the Bundesliga clubs Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC , but eventually moved to England to join the Bolton Wanderers . After a brief stint at the Saudi club al-Ittihad , he returned to Mexico in 2007 and played for Cruz Azul the 2007 Apertura. On December 21, 2007, he moved to CF Monterrey and played the 2008 Clausura for this team. After stints at Deportivo Guadalajara and Puebla FC , he landed at Monarcas Morelia at the beginning of 2010 .

Borgetti was best known in Europe for his performances at the 2002 World Cup . He played 89 times for the Mexican national team and scored 46 goals. He scored three goals at the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany. At the 2006 World Cup , also in Germany, Borgetti was one of Mexico's hopes. However, an injury prevented him from being used in the group stage. When he played his first World Cup game against Argentina in 2006, he made an own goal to make it 1-1.

He made his last international match on June 21, 2008 in a 7-0 win against Belize , with two more goals.
