The Club Atlético Monarcas Morelia , also known as Monarcas Morelia or Monarcas for short , was a Mexican football club from Morelia , Michoacán . The name was derived from the butterfly of the same name , which was the club's mascot .
The team, which played in the Primera División de Mexico since 1981 , was owned by the Mexican television channel TV Azteca . In June 2020, the team moved to the newly built Estadio de Mazatlán in Mazatlán , Sinaloa and formed the new club Mazatlán FC there .
history
The association was founded on November 21, 1924 under the name "Oro" and later renamed "Oro Morelia". He is a founding member of the Segunda División, which is held for the first time in 1950/51.
When Puebla FC had to withdraw from the Primera División after the 1956/57 season due to financial problems, Morelia moved into the football club as runner-up in the second division . Morelia played there until she was relegated in the summer of 1968.
In 1981 the club, which was renamed “Atlético Morelia” in 1974, succeeded in re-advancing to the top division, to which it has belonged continuously since then.
It was not until 1999 that the name was changed to the name Club Atlético Monarcas Morelia , which is still valid today , under which the club experienced its most successful era. In the winter of 2000, Morelia wins the Apertura 2000/01 and is the first - and so far only - champion of Mexico. In the years that followed, Morelia remained a top team, but it soon had the “flaw of Leverkusen ”. In 2002 and 2003 the team reached four finals: both times in the domestic championship season 2002/03 and twice in a row in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup - and always leaves the field as a loser.
For the first time in 2004/05 Morelia finished a season as a superlider, as the team with the highest points in the Mexican league. Nevertheless, you end the preliminary round (Apertura) as the worst point group third, which means that the play-offs (called Liguilla in Mexico) are missed. In the second half of the season ( Clausura ) Morelia is the team with the best points with 35 points, but fails in the semi-finals of the play-offs at UAG Tecos .
Two days before the 70th anniversary of the association was the move of the Association to Mazatlan , Sinaloa announced where under the influence of various donors, a new association called Mazatlan FC was formed, which took Monarcas Morelia from the season 2020/21 in the Liga MX will compete.
