The Mazatlán Futbol Club , or Mazatlán FC for short , is a Mexican football club from Mazatlán , Sinaloa . The club, founded in June 2020, succeeded Monarcas Morelia in the Liga MX for the 2020/21 season and plays its home games at the newly built Estadio de Mazatlán .

history

In 2017, the government of the state of Sinaloa decided to expand the sports facilities. It was also decided to build a new football stadium in Mazatlán with the aim of attracting a first division club to the port city in the future . The equivalent of 25.6 million euros, the venue was opened in mid-2020 as the Estadio de Mazatlán and an existing team was looked for that would move to Mazatlán. The three potential clubs named in the media are Club Puebla , Querétaro Fútbol Club and Monarcas Morelia . On June 2, it was announced that Monarcas Morelia would move to Mazatlán and play as Mazatlán FC for the 2020/21 season . About a week later, the club's new logo was unveiled, which includes the game colors purple, black and white. A little later, Francisco Palencia was presented as the first head coach.

The release

The first game in the history of Mazatlán FC was played on July 3, 2020 at their home country Estadio de Mazatlán. It was an encounter for the Copa México against UANL Tigres (0-0), for which coach Palencia sent the following starting line-up: Miguel Fraga * - Nicolás Díaz , Jorge Padilla * , Gonzalo Jara , Efraín Velarde - Aldo Rocha , Eduardo del Ángel , Luis Mendoza , Cándido Ramírez - Miguel Sansores , Manuel Pérez * . With the exception of the 3 players marked with an "asterisk", the other 8 players spent the previous season (2019/20) at the acquired Club Atlético Monarcas Morelia. Only goalkeeper Fraga (from UAT Correcaminos ), defender Padilla (from Leones Negros Guadalajara ) and striker Pérez (from Mineros de Zacatecas ) came from other clubs. 9 players are Mexicans and the other 2 Chileans. #

The league debut

The team also made their Liga MX debut on July 27, 2020 in their home stadium. The opponent was Puebla FC , against whom the "newcomers" lost 4-1. The only goal for the hosts came from César Huerta at the break of 1-1 in the 36th minute. In the starting line-up there were 7 players who were also sent onto the field for the first cup game (see above). Of these, Del Ángel, Pérez and Velarde were completely absent from the league debut, while Sansores, who was not included in the starting line-up, was substituted on in the 82nd minute (for Meraz). For these players, the two Mexicans Roberto Meraz and César Huerta, the Colombian José Enrique Ortiz and the Venezuelan Fernando Aristeguieta in the starting eleven, all of which were also taken over by the Monarcas. In addition to the aforementioned Sansores, the two Chileans Martín Rodríguez (for Ramírez) and Jorge Valdivia (for Huerta), who were also in action for Morelia the previous season, were substituted on. Thus, of the 14 players used in the league debut, 12 were previously with the Monarcas Morelia.
