society

Valdivia began his career in the youth of the top Chilean club CSD Colo-Colo . For the 2003 season he moved up in their professional squad, but was then awarded for half a year to CD Universidad de Concepción . There he came to his first professional appearances in Chile's first division. In the summer of 2003, a loan deal with the Spanish second division club Rayo Vallecano followed . There the midfielder only had a few opportunities to play. After his return, those responsible for Colo-Colo loaned him abroad again. Valdivia played for the traditional Swiss team Servette FC Genève for a year in Spain and played here for a year. After his return to Colo Colo, the offensive player finally made it into the starting line-up. The team played a good year, winning the Apertura Championship in 2006. In July 2006, Valdivia said goodbye to Colo Colo and signed a contract with the Brazilian club Palmeiras São Paulo . Due to his good performances, he quickly rose to the public's favorite and was voted Player of the 2007 Team by them. In 2008 he was a key figure in winning the São Paulo State Championship . His skills put him back on the list of European scouts. Hertha BSC was also interested in the player. Nevertheless, there was no repeated move to Europe. In August 2008 it was announced that Valdivia had decided to move to the Al Ain Club in the United Arab Emirates. There he signed a four-year contract. Here, too, he quickly won the favor of the audience, who gave him the name El Mago , the magician. Valdivia had a great season with Al Ain. In addition to winning the Etisalat Emirates Cup and the UAE President Cup , the triple was made perfect with the success in the competition for the UAE Super Cup . Because of his good performances and quick association with the club, Valdivia was soon named captain of the team. In the summer transfer phase of 2010, he moved to Palmeiras São Paulo. After five years in Series A , he returned to the UAE Arabian Gulf League, this time for two years and 2.5 million euros per year at al-Wahda. After his contract expired, he moved back to his home club CSD Colo-Colo. He stayed there until January 2020. Then he moved to Monarcas Morelia in the Liga MX in Mexico on a free transfer . In March 2020 he sued his ex-club Colo-Colo because, according to Valdivia, the Chilean club owed him 356 million pesos.

National team

In 2004, Valdivia was appointed to the national team by the then coach of the Chileans , Juvenal Olmos . He previously played for the association's U-23 team. In 2007, the offensive player came to his first tournament when he was nominated for the 2007 Copa America . In 2004 he was still missing.

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he and Chile achieved an excellent second place behind group winners Brazil . He scored his only goal in qualifying in a 4-2 away win over Colombia . With this victory, the qualification for the World Cup finals was finally mastered. In May 2010, Valdivia was then appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup by coach Marcelo Bielsa . There he was used in all three preliminary round matches and the round of 16 against Brazil . After the 3-0 defeat against their continental rivals, the Chileans were eliminated from the competition.
