The Armor-Stiner House , also known as the Carmer Octagon House , is a Victorian-style house located at 45 West Clinton Avenue in Irvington , Westchester County , New York . It is considered to be the world's only octagonal residential building with a dome. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976 .

The house was built from 1859 to 1860 on behalf of financier Paul J. Armor and is based on ideas from Orson Fowler . The actual architect of the house is unknown. The dome was added when the house was expanded by tea importer Joseph Stiner between 1872 and 1876. The Armor-Stiner House is considered to be one of the most lavish octagon houses of the time.

The historian Carl Carmer later lived here , and according to his statement it is haunted here. In 1976 the house briefly belonged to the National Trust for Historic Preservation , which prevented it from being demolished. He then sold it to the architect Joseph Pell Lombardi, who specializes in the reconstruction of historical buildings and then reconstructed the house, its interior, the property and the outbuildings.

The house is still a private residence today. It is on the south side of West Clinton Avenue on the crest of a hill that overlooks the Hudson River further west. The structure is about 500 m from the river bank and about 40 m higher, in line with Fowler's ideas. The Croton Aqueduct , another National Historic Landmark, is adjacent to the east.

An exterior shot of the house was used in the film Across the Universe .
