history

The home stadium of the Universidad de Concepción

The Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción association was founded in 1994 in the city of Concepción near the west coast of Chile . The club should not be confused with one called Deportes Conceptión , which is also located in the city of the same name, played in the Primera División for more than thirty years , but is currently deeply immersed in the second division. A second local rival is CD Arturo Fernández Vial , which has since completely disappeared into insignificance.

CD Universidad de Concepción originally emerged from the university of the same name and is therefore to be understood as a university team. After the founding, they first played in the Tercera División, the fourth highest Chilean division. From there, the club managed to rise to the top division of the Andean country in a relatively few years. Just eight years after the club was founded, the first promotion to the Primera División was achieved in 2002, after having failed to gain promotion in the playoff games in 1998. Since then, CD Universidad de Concepción has been one of the relatively stable members of the top division of Chile. As a climber, you started so well in the first class that qualification for the Copa Libertadores 2004 could be achieved. In a preliminary round group with Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte from Brazil , Santos Laguna from Mexico and FC Caracas from Venezuela , Universidad de Concepción finished last in the table, only two 2-2 draws jumped out against Santos Laguna. To date, this was the club's only participation in the Copa Libertadores . In the same year they also participated in the Copa Sudamericana , where the end came early. In the elimination of teams from Chile and Bolivia, they lost to Club Bolívar in the final , which would later advance to the final and only there should be lost to the Boca Juniors .

In 2008, the CD Universidad de Concepción celebrated the greatest success in the club's history and thus the only important title to date. In the final of the Copa Chile , the Chilean soccer cup, Concepción Deportes Ovalle defeated 2-1 after having prevailed against teams like Unión Española or Lota Schwager .

The team from CD Universidad de Concepción is currently in the first Chilean football league, after the promotion was made clear in the 2013 season with reaching first rank in Primera B.
