Eduardo Mario Acevedo Cardozo (born September 25, 1959 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and current coach .

Player career

The 1.78 meter tall defender Acevedo began his sporting career at club level initially with the Uruguayan club Club Atlético Defensor , where he played in the Uruguayan Primera División from 1979 to 1986. During this time he was involved in winning the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores in 1981 . In 1986 he moved to Spain to Deportivo La Coruña and came there in the 1986/87 season from his debut on October 4, 1986 against Real Oviedo to his last game participation on November 9, 1986 against Figueres to five second division appearances (no goal). From there, his path led him to UAG Tecos . With the Mexicans he played 80 games between 1987 and 1990, in which he hit the opposing goal once. In the 1991/92 season he joined the Japanese club Toshiba SC . After this last international stint as a player, he was active in Uruguay with Fénix (1993), Rentistas (1994) and Sud América (1995) until 1995 , before ending his career. Racing Club de Montevideo is listed as another undated career station .

National team

Acevedo was a member of the Celeste , for which he completed a total of 41 international matches between August 11, 1983 and June 16, 1986 and in which he met the opposing goal once. In 1983 he was involved in winning the South American Championship . He also took part in the 1986 World Cup.

Coaching career

Acevedo coached the Sud América club in 1996 , Defensor in 1998 and Deportivo Maldonado from 1999 until his resignation in June 2001 . Possibly another brief period followed as coach of Defensor Sporting 2002, he was coach in Mexico at Gavilanes de Nuevo Laredo . In the Apertura 2003 and the Clausura 2004 he sat in the coaching bench at UAG Tecos . In 2004 he was under contract with Monarcas Morelia until 2005 , before returning to Tecos for a second term in Apertura 2005 and Clausura 2006. On February 25, 2009, he took over the training management from interim coach Richard Martínez and replaced Pablo Repetto , who had previously migrated to the Bolivian club Blooming, as coach of Club Atlético Cerro . His coaching team there consisted of his brother Alejandro Acevedo and Eduardo Arismendi . With Cerro, he won the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores 2009 and thus qualified for the group stage of the Copa Libertadores 2010 . At the beginning of August 2009, however, he left Cerro and took over the coaching position at Nacional on August 5th that year as the successor to Gerardo Pelusso, who had been dismissed the day before . After his time at Nacional, where his contract was not renewed due to the lack of but hoped to win the championship, he was coach of the Mexican club Estudiantes Tecos . This third engagement in Mexico, where he succeeded Miguel Herrera , began on September 8, 2010. In December 2010, Danubio FC announced its commitment to the position of head coach as the successor to Gustavo Matosas for the following season starting in February 2011. Javier Valdecantos should assist him as an assistant coach. In May 2011 he was replaced after just a few months due to the poor results and replaced by Gustavo Machaín . On March 9, 2012 it was announced that Acevedo would take over the coaching of the Argentine club CA Banfield . As a result, Acevedo only scored eight out of a possible 42 points with the team. Banfield was relegated to the Primera B Nacional . At the end of June 2012, like club president Carlos Portell, he announced his departure from the Argentine club. From June 2015 to December 2015 he trained again for the Club Atlético Cerro team. He has been the head coach at Defensor Sporting since February 2016.
