The Club Deportivo Maldonado (nicknames: El Depor , Verdirojo ) is a football club from the city of the same name, Maldonado, in southern Uruguay, in the Maldonado department . The club's soccer team plays in the second highest Uruguayan league, the Segunda División , in the 2016 season .

history

The association was founded on August 25, 1928. So far, Maldonado has won the league Capital del Fùtbol de Maldonado championship nine times (1952, 1960, 1961, 1969, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1987, 1992). In 1995 they played for the first time in Uruguayan professional football and belonged to the Segunda División until they were promoted in 1998. That year they had finished third in the Segunda División and initially lost the final of the promotion play-off. After submitting an application to the association, Maldonado, together with the two other clubs Tacuarembó FC and Atlético Bella Vista (later renamed Paysandú Bella Vista ), was granted the right to start in the first division for the following season in the course of a league increase by granting a license. From 1999 Maldonado belonged to the Primera División , the highest Uruguayan league, for six seasons . The best placement of the season was two ninth places in the final tables of 2002 and 2003. After an 18th place in the table at the end of the Torneo Clasificatorio 2004, they relegated to the Segunda División. Deportivo Maldonado has belonged to Uruguay's second division ever since. In 2006, however, the team did not take part in the game. The best season placement in the second division after relegation to the first division was achieved at the end of the 2010/11 season when they reached the promotion play-off round with occupancy of 5th place. There they failed in the semi-finals at Boston River .

Others

With regard to the Maldonado club, there are allegations that the club is acting as an intermediary for third-party ownership (TPO) investors in order to minimize the tax burden on investors who have their own player rights. Talented players from the highest South American leagues are said to have been signed and immediately loaned or sold to larger clubs (without these players playing for Deportivo Maldonado even once).

General

The seat of the association is in Av. España 693 in Maldonado, the capital of the department. The team's home games are played in the Estadio Domingo Burgueño, which has a capacity of 22,000 .
