The Primera División Profesional de Uruguay is the top division in Uruguayan men's football and carries out the championship. It is organized by the Uruguayan Football Association AUF . Initially founded in 1900 as an amateur league, professionalism took hold since the championship round in 1932.
mode
The mode of competition as well as promotion and relegation regulations were subject to constant change. 16 teams are currently eligible to play. The game is played from August to May. Three teams are relegated to the Segunda División Profesional , the promotion and relegation rules referring to the two seasons completed immediately before. The points scored there are added together. However, there is a special regulation in that a club that should actually be relegated based on the number of points achieved, but is entitled to play the championship final, does not have to leave the league. In this case, the club above it in the relegation table must move into the second highest division. For previous promoters, for whom a first division season can only be used to determine the relegated person, a separate, different calculation is carried out to determine the number of points.
format
Since 1994 the championship has been divided into two parts, the Torneo Apertura (first round) and the Torneo Clausura (final round). In the end there were two play-offs between the winners of both Torneos. While the seasonal system was based on the typical annual rhythm in South America until 2005, after an intermediate season in 2005, the switch to the "European system" followed for the 2005/06 season, after which the first half of the season takes place in the second half and then the Torneo Clausura is held in the first half of the following year. Since 2005/06, the winner has been playing against the best placed for the whole year. This is not necessary if both Torneos are champions of the same team.

In this context, a central dispute flares up again and again in Uruguayan football about which of the two dominant clubs - Nacional or Peñarol - is the country's record champions. The 46 national championship titles that Nacional can boast are compared to 44 on the part of Peñarol. The supporters of the Aurinegros also count the five titles that the immediate predecessor club CURCC had won, the combined history of success. In addition, the two titles that were won during the split in the organizational structure of Uruguayan football in 1924 and 1926, but not recognized by the UP, are added, so that according to this calculation, 51 championship titles would be on Peñarol's credit side. According to the sources, it is a historical fact that the CURCC association ceased to exist and a new association emerged with Peñarol.
