The 1956 season of the Primera División was the 53rd season (the 25th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted of ten clubs in the championship season of 1956, whose teams met twice in a total of 90 championship games. There were 18 game days. The championship won Nacional Montevideo as first in the table in front of Club Atlético Peñarol and Club Atlético Cerro as second and third in the season's final table . As the bottom of the table Sud América rose from the Primera División to the Segunda División . Carlos María Carranza was the top scorer with 18 goals .
