The 1979 season of the Primera División was the 76th season (the 48th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted in the championship season of 1979 from 13 clubs, whose teams met twice in a total of 156 championship games played from May to mid-December of the year. There were 367 goals. The championship won the Club Atlético Peñarol as first table in front of Nacional Montevideo and Centro Atlético Fénix as second and third in the season final table . The Liverpool FC had in the Segunda División descend. Nacional and Club Atlético Defensor qualified for the 1980 Copa Libertadores .

Waldemar Victorino from Nacional Montevideo was the top scorer with 19 goals .
