The 1961 season of the Primera División was the 58th season (the 30th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted in the championship season of 1961 from ten clubs, whose teams met twice in a total of 90 championship games. There were 18 game days. The championship won the Club Atlético Peñarol as first table in front of Nacional Montevideo and Club Atlético Defensor as second and third in the season's final table . Losing the relegation playoffs between the bottom of the table Centro Atlético Fénix and the bottom of the table Montevideo Wanderers , the Wanderers relegated from the Primera División to the Segunda División after two defeats . The top scorer was Alberto Spencer with 18 goals .
