The 1989 season of the Primera División was the 86th season (the 58th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .
The Primera División consisted of 13 clubs in the championship season of 1989, whose teams met each other once in a total of 78 championship games played from the beginning of November to the second half of December of that year. 179 goals were scored. The championship won the Club Atlético Progreso as first table in front of Nacional Montevideo and Club Atlético Peñarol as second and third in the season's final table . There was no relegation to the Segunda División . The following season was increased to 14 teams. Progreso and Defensor Sporting qualified for the 1990 Copa Libertadores .
The top scorer was Johnny Miqueiro (Progreso), Óscar Quagliata (Huracán Buceo) and Diego Aguirre (Peñarol) with seven goals each .
