The Defensor Sporting Club , known as Defensor Sporting , is a sports club based in Montevideo , Uruguay . The club colors are purple and white.

history

origin of the name

There are essentially two different versions of the club's name and its origin. According to this, the workers of the nearby glass factory associated with the association are said to have called him “Defensores de la Huelga” during the labor disputes that were prevalent at the time. The second variant says that the team got its name symbolically as the "defender" of the barrios and the area around Punta Carretas . It is also reported that the factory founded in 1904 itself was called "Defensores de la Huelga" and Alfredo Ghierra therefore named the club after it.

Foundation and time of amateur football

The club was founded on March 15, 1913 as Defensor Football Club in Barrio Punta Carretas near Parque Urbano . The club's jersey colors were originally supposed to be completely green. However, since Belgrano, a team in the league, was already using these colors, a black jersey with a light blue stripe was chosen. In the further course of the story they switched to today's purple jersey. The first president of the association was Nicolás Podestá . After enrolling in the Liga Uruguaya de Football you started in the Tercera División . The club played their first official game there in the championship in 1913 against Independencia . The game ended 5-0. After promotion to the second division in 1914, the march through to the Primera División, which was then an amateur league, was ensured. The club then celebrated their debut in Uruguay's top division on April 8, 1915 with a 0-0 win against the Wanderers . A little later you made your first appearance on an international level when you met the Argentine first division club Atlético Atlanta on May 25, 1915 . The friendly game, which ended with a 2-1 victory in favor of Defensors, was played in Parque Chacabuco . The first Defensors playing field was located on the then Calle Zamayúa , today's Julio Herrera y Reissig next to today's engineering faculty ( Facultad de Ingeniería ) of the Universidad de la República . As early as 1915, the company moved from there to a square on José Ellauri and Joaquín Núñez . Two years later, the games were held in Parque Ricci on Capitán Videla Street between Alarcón and Diego Lamas . In 1917 they rose from the Primera División as bottom of the table and only appeared again in 1923 at the highest league level. This time, however, during the phase of the split in the organizational structure of Uruguayan football in the parallel championship of the Federación Uruguaya de Football (FUF) and under the name Club Atlético Defensor . The club's president that year was José Capozzoli , and Luis Franzini took over this position in 1925 . After an 11th place in 1923, they were fifth in the table in 1924. From 1927 the club played again under the umbrella of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF) first class. The new playing field , now located in Parque Rodó , had already been inaugurated on September 21, 1926 and was to be renamed Estadio Luis Franzini in 1963 . In the opening game that day against the Club Atlético Cerro team, which ended with a 4-1 win , Santiago Celsi scored the first goal at his new place of work. Defensor remained first class until the introduction of professional football in Uruguay in 1932. In the 1929 season, Defensor achieved the best result with third place in the final table.

Beginning of the professional football era up to the first championship

The first encounter in the Primera División, now designed as a professional league, Defensor graduated on May 22, 1932 against Bella Vista . The first professional year you finished fourth in the table. From then on, Defensor continued to play in the top division. In 1937 they barely prevented relegation when they beat Racing 4-1 in relegation. The year 1941 marks the beginning of the second term of office, which lasted until 1962, of Luis Franzini , who also died in that year and who a little later gave the stadium its name. After remaining in the professional era without a title win, but already in the league with a third place in the table in the years 1944 and 1945 had the best placement in the professional league, Defensor finally recorded victory in the Torneo de in 1947 Honor .

The team that ensured the triumph at the time consisted of the following players:

Juan Bianchini , Julio Barrios , José Vázquez , Alfredo Young , José Riobo , Carlos Chagas , Alcides Mañay , Juan Emilio Píriz , Ramón Castro , José "Loncha" García , Walter Clavares , Raúl Sarro and Ramón Ferrés

In the year of this title win they also reached the Uruguayan runner-up for the first time unofficially, when they prevailed in the relevant play-offs against the equal points teams Peñarols and the Rampla Juniors . However, since the game Defensors against the Rampla Juniors was not played (Defensor had defeated Peñarol 3-1, the Rampla Juniors lost against Peñarol with 1: 2) this second championship rank was not officially awarded. In 1960 they secured another trophy when they got the upper hand in the Torneo Nacional Copa Artigas .

In 1976 Defensor succeeded under coach Ricardo de León as the first football club since the introduction of the professional league in Uruguay to break through the supremacy of Nacional and Peñarol and to win the Uruguayan championship .

The squad in the championship year consisted of the following players, among others, who were led to the title by the coaching team consisting of Julio Santos (Preparador Físico) and Alberto Silva (kit manager) alongside de León:

In 1989, after a merger with the basketball club Sporting Club Uruguay, it was renamed Defensor Sporting Club . In 1991 they triumphed again in the championship under the aegis of Juan Ahuntchaín . In 2007 they were classified in both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana (overall they have taken part in this competition twice so far) as fifth. The last and fourth championship won dates from the 2007/08 season. Jorge Da Silva was responsible as a trainer. In that season they won the Torneo Apertura 2007 and ranked first in the overall table for the year. After they won the semi-final first leg on June 22, 2008 at the Clausura winner Peñarol with 1: 2 and the second leg ended 0: 0 on June 25, 2008, Defensor was the champion, since the hosting of final playoffs between the winner of the overall table and the winner of the duel between Apertura and Clausura winners was now obsolete.

In these crucial games against Peñarol, the championship squad consisted of the following players:

Martín Silva , Pablo Pintos , Mario Risso , Andrés Lamas , Sebastián Ariosa , Julio Marchant , Pablo Gaglianone , Miguel Amado , Jairo Castillo , Diego De Souza , Sebastián Fernández , Régis Lima , Tabaré Viudez , William Ferreira Martínez , Fernando Rodríguez , Diego Ferreira , Juan Martín Parodi , Juan Pablo Rodríguez and Hugo Costela

In 2009 they reached the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores , but failed there because of the eventual overall winner Estudiantes de La Plata . In the recent past, the club won the Torneo Clausura in 2009 and 2012. In the 2012/13 season the club finished second in the table after the Apertura. This was followed again by the win in the Clausura, so that one qualified for the playoffs for the Uruguayan championship against Peñarol . There one was defeated however. The following season, however, was extremely unsuccessful at national level. As twelfth in the Apertura and ninth in the Clausura, Defensor only finished 11th in the overall annual table for the 2013/14 season . In the Copa Libertadores 2014 , however, the Defensors team advanced to the semi-finals and only lost to the Paraguayan representatives Club Nacional there .
