Liguilla Pre-Libertadores
The Liguilla Pre-Libertadores was a Uruguayan soccer club competition.
The Liguilla has been played since 1974 after the end of the Primera División season. The purpose of the competition was to determine the Uruguayan participants in the CONMEBOL international club competitions . Since the 2005/06 season, the tournament has also been known as Copa Artigas .
Composition and mode
The right to start in the Liguilla resulted from the season placement achieved during the first division season. The best teams of the season took part. By 1985, six teams played the Liguilla, with each team playing once against each participant. In 1986 they switched to a group mode with two groups of four and a final round of the first two of the groups. As early as 1987, they returned to the previous mode with six teams. In some cases, the mode of delivery was modified and play-off games followed after the group phase. In 1995, 1996 and 1997 the number of participants was increased to eight teams. 1997 was played again in two groups of four. In 1998 only four teams competed in the tournament. In the following years, too, the number of participants was repeatedly changed.
Qualification goal
From 1974 to 1990 only the participants of the Copa Libertadores were played. From 1991 to 1999 this tournament was used to determine which Uruguayan teams were eligible to compete in the Copa Conmebol . Since 2002, instead of the Copa Conmebol, the participants of the Copa Sudamericana have also been determined. Since the 2009/10 season, the Uruguayan participants in international club competitions have been determined by their position in the overall annual table (Copa Libertadores) and the final tables of the Apertura and Clausura (Copa Sudamericana) for the respective first division season.
