The Racing Club de Montevideo , or Racing for short , is a football club from Montevideo in Uruguay . He currently plays in the highest Uruguayan league, the Primera División .
history
Foundation and first half of the 20th century
The association was founded on April 6, 1919. The association's beginnings lie in the Barrio Reducto in Montevidean . Here arose from a group around the brothers Dante, Germán, Armando and Osvaldo Roberto as well as Ramón Barceló, Bartolomé Grillo, Carlos Sagredo, José Ameri, Pablo Giúdice, Pedro Radaelli, Casimiro Céspedes, Francisco and José Mendoza, Oscar Trillo, Victorio Alonso, Francisco Jauregui, Juan Maggioli and Domingo Vanzulli came up with the idea of registering a team to play in the Uruguayan league. This group of young people played at that time still under the name Yuyito FC , but called from then on the basis of the models in Argentina ( Racing Club Avellaneda ) and France ( Paris Racing Club ) Racing . On February 14, 1920, the AUF took on the new association. With the club colors green and white - chosen after the colors of the tram in which it was founded - they entered the Torneo de la divisional Extra . The first game was played in Piedras Blancas against Tomás S. Blanco . The date of this debut was May 23 of the same year. The first major title was won in 1923. In that year Racing won the championship of the then Divisional Intermedia second division. Just four years after the club was founded, the young club was now playing in the Primera División, which then consisted of twelve clubs . In the debut season they finished fourth in the final table. In 1929 they won a second championship of the Divisional Intermedia .
In 1941, the club finally acquired a new 20,000 square meter club area and moved to the Sayago district to the new club headquarters at Millán 4712 . On October 5th of that year they played there for the first time in front of their own audience. This first round match of the Copa Uruguaya against Bella Vista (final score 1: 1) was attended by around 4,000 football fans. Antonio Álvarez scored the first goal on the new club pitch .
Well-known players in the first phase of the club's history were, for example, the two world champions of 1930 and 1950, Santos Iriarte and Julio Pérez .
Second half of the 20th century until today
In the second half of the 20th century, the Segunda División won four championships (1955, 1958, 1974 and 1989). A fifth was added in the 2007/08 season at the beginning of the new century. The new millennium was initially not very successful for Racing up to this fifth championship in the Segunda División. Mainly in the second division, they only got three points in the Torneo Apertura 2006, were the only club without a win and were knocked off last. But now a rapid rise began. First followed by winning the Torneo Apertura 2007 and with the subsequent season championship they celebrated their return to the Primera División. That promotion team included Sebastián Balsas , Líber Quiñones , Jonathan Blanes and Ernesto Goñi . Once there, the club took off, set the top scorer with Liber Quiñones and finished sixth at the end of the season, which meant qualifying for the Copa Artigas 2009 . In this competition you came second, which in turn led to international honors, because you qualified for the Copa Libertadores in 2010 for the first time in the club's history . Here, too, they did respectable, but failed in the group stage after they had occupied second place in the table behind Corinthians São Paulo .
The first division seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13 ended 10th and 9th in the middle of the table. After the Apertura 2013, Racing was only in 14th place in the table. In the Clausura 2014 you finished seventh. With this, the club finished 8th in the overall annual table for the 2013/14 season . In 2015/16 they were only 14th in the overall table.
