Victoriano Santos Iriarte (born November 2, 1902 in Canelones Department , Uruguay , † November 11, 1938 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Club career

The El Canario named Iriarte was the descendant of a family from Puerto de la Cruz . He was active in his sporting career at club level for the two Uruguayan teams Racing and Peñarol as a player. Initially playing for Racing, he moved to the Aurinegros in 1932 . There he was in the squad from 1932 to 1934. As a left striker, he won the Uruguayan championship with Peñarol in 1932, the first of the beginning Profiaera. After he became seriously ill with tuberculosis in 1934 , he had to end his career. According to Luciano Álvarez , he died in 1938 at the age of 35.

National team

The striker , who was born in the Departamento Canelones and whose family came from Puerto de la Cruz , was a member of the Celeste , with which he was able to secure the world championship title at the first staging of this tournament at the Football World Cup in 1930 . In this tournament he was used in all four games of Uruguay and scored two goals. His last goal was the important 3-2 lead in the final against Argentina, which they ultimately won 4-2. Overall, he completed only one more international match for the national team of his home country called Celeste between 1930 and 1931 . So he came in the period from July 18, 1930 to September 6, 1931 only five international appearances, in which he hit the opposing goal twice.
