Zoilo Lucas Saldombide (born October 26, 1903 (according to other sources March 18, 1905 or March 23, 1906 ) in Santa Lucía , † December 4, 1981 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Club career

Saldombide, who lived his entire life in his hometown Santa Lucía, played in his homeland from 1924 to 1929 initially for the Wanderers . There he was used both as a right winger and a left winger. In the years 1930 to 1934 he was under contract with Nacional , for which he had already participated in the tour through Central and North America in 1927, and is assigned to the left side of the field. With the latter club he was Uruguayan champions in 1933 and 1934 and completed a total of 182 games in which he scored 45 goals.

National team

The striker was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . Overall, he completed 15 international matches for his home country from his debut on December 10, 1922 until his last appearance on September 21, 1928, in which he scored three times in the opposing goal. During this time, the Uruguayan selection won the gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics . He was also a member of the winning squad in the two tournament victories of the South American Championship in 1924 and 1926 . He missed the 1928 Olympic Games because of his entrance exam in the Banco Hipotecario . However, Saldombide, who had not played an international match for two years, was again part of the squad at the football World Cup in 1930 , which was able to secure the world championship title when this event was held for the first time. However, it was no longer used.
