Juan Peregrino Anselmo - in Uruguay primarily known as Pelegrín Anselmo - (born April 30, 1902 in Capurro , Montevideo , Uruguay , † October 27, 1975 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Player career

Anselmo, for whom both April 30, 1902 and August 3, 1904 are named as the date of birth, was initially in the ranks of the Centro Atlético Fénix in 1922 and scored nine goals in 21 games for the Montevideans. From 1923 he played for the Club Atlético Peñarol . Up to 1935 he had 93 hits in 159 games. At that time, the Aurinegros won the Uruguayan championship in 1928, 1929, 1932 and 1935, the first two of which were amateur championships. The titles in the years 1936, 1937 and 1938 are also attributed to the Uruguayan playing in the attack - albeit without exact deployment dates.

National team

The striker was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . In total, he completed eight international matches for Celeste between November 1, 1927 and August 15, 1934 . He hit the opposing goal three times.

Peregrino Anselmo was a member of the Uruguayan squad that won the gold medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics . However, he was not used. At the football world championship in 1930 he was world champion with the Celeste when this tournament was held for the first time. During the World Cup he played in the group game against Romania and in the semi-finals against Yugoslavia. He was also part of the Uruguayan squad at the South American Championships in 1927 and 1935 . In 1935 Uruguay won the title.

Coaching career

After Béla Guttmann withdrew as a coach at Peñarol following the 4-1 win over Clásico against Nacional Montevideo on October 14, 1962, he replaced the Hungarian in this role and led the club to the championship until the end of the year. The sources are contradictory as to whether he was replaced in early 1963 as a result of Guttmann's return or by Roque Máspoli .
