Albrecht Milnik (born November 10, 1931 in Hermsdorf near Görlitz ; now Jerzmanki as part of Gmina Zgorzelec ) is a German forest scientist . He emerged primarily with forest biographies and is considered one of the leading forest historians in Germany.

Live and act

Born in Hermsdorf in Lausitz , Albrecht Milnik grew up there on a farm. As was customary in the then newly founded GDR , he began his forestry career in 1949 with an apprenticeship as a skilled forest worker, which he completed by 1951 in the Saxon forestry office in Klitten , which was part of the district forestry office in Niesky in Upper Lusatia . In 1953 he passed the Abitur in Dresden . In the same year Milnik began studying forest sciences at the Forestry Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin in Eberswalde , which he graduated in 1957 with a degree in forest engineering .

Afterwards Milnik was until 1964 in the forest management and forestry company operating practice. In the meantime, the forestry faculty in Eberswalde, which had become unpopular, had been closed as a teaching institution in 1963 by order of the SED authorities and converted into the Institute for Forest Sciences. In 1964, Milnik was given a position as a research assistant there, which he held until 1991. During this time, his main focus was on questions of forest management, prognosis and international cooperation. 1971 doctorate Milnik at the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences to Berlin with the dissertation studies on grades and production goals of pine stands in the lowlands of the GDR to Dr. rer. silv. As a result of voluntary work, an intensive occupation with hunting topics developed, which was reflected in numerous publications between 1969 and 1995, especially about red deer .

As all forest history work at the Institute for Forest Sciences had been suspended from 1970 for political reasons, Milnik was only able to focus on forest history work since the fall of the Wall , and from 1992 to 1996 he also headed a corresponding ABM project group. The forester founded the Eberswalder forest history series , the first issue of which appeared in 1993. Milnik also played a leading role in coming to terms with the forest history of the GDR. As project manager, he was largely responsible for the extensive work In Responsibility for the Forest presented in 1998 by the project group “Forest History Eberswalde” . The history of forestry in the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR .

In 2000 Albrecht Milnik completed his habilitation in forest history at the Technical University of Dresden with a biography of Bernhard Danckelmann . The study on Hugo Conwentz , one of the founders of nature conservation , which was first published in 1997 , was followed by the biographies of Alfred Möller (2001), the father of the concept of permanent forests , followed by August von Burgsdorff (2002) and a biography of his long-term scientific companion Egon Wagenknecht (2005). With these standard works on important forest personalities, Milnik made a name for himself as one of the leading forest historians in Germany. He underpinned this as the main author and editor of the biographical volume Im Dienst am Wald. Lives and achievements of Brandenburg foresters (2006) as well as the extensive study Ein Land wie ein Eichenblatt. Silesian forest history in Prussian times (1741–1945). which he wrote at the popular request of mainly Polish foresters and published in 2010.

On April 7, 2004, he took over the 34th tree sponsorship of the Association of Tree Sponsors. The pine expert's godfather tree is a Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) in the Schorfheide (Oberförsterei Pechteich, Revier Eichenheide, department 136) about 160 years old at the time of the sponsorship .

Forester Dr. rer. silv. habil. Albrecht Milnik lives and works in Eberswalde. He has designed numerous exhibitions and given lectures, not only for the University of Applied Sciences, but also as an active member of the Eberswalde Association for Local History, in whose publication Eberswalder Yearbook for Local History, Cultural and Natural History he is regularly represented with mostly forest history and biographical contributions .
