The Rudolf Steiner School Vienna-Mauer is a private school with public status in the district of wall in the 23rd Viennese district Liesing . It was the first Waldorf school in Austria and belongs to the Austrian Waldorf Association. In addition to 12 school levels and a kindergarten with two locations, it also houses the office of the Austrian Waldorf Association.

historical development

The school was founded in 1927 and after the connection forbidden Austria in 1938 to the German Reich. After Bronja Zahlingen (1912–2000) returned from emigration, a Waldorf kindergarten was founded in 1955 . This was financed primarily by Kitty Wenckebach (1899–1988), a childless daughter of a cardiologist . In 1963, a group of parents began with “home lessons” and in 1966 the first lessons took place in a “public schoolhouse” with four classes, with the City of Vienna making the classrooms available to the Waldorf Association in a Meidling primary school. In 1969 the move to the listed baroque castle Mauer took place.

Acquisitions and construction activity

On May 6, 1972 the foundation stone was laid for the new kindergarten building at Marktgemeindegasse 42, not far from the school, in the presence of important contemporary witnesses ( Helmut von Kügelgen , Kitty Wenckebach, Bronja Zahlingen, Elisabeth Gergely, Manfred Kobel, Walter Schulz). In 1975 the building opposite the Maurer Schlössl (Endresstraße 113) including the garden was purchased, in which the 4 lower grades, the after-school care and a kindergarten group are now. On June 24, 1980 the foundation stone was laid for the ballroom, which opened in autumn 1982, the upper level wing and the workshops. In 1988/89, a donation from the late Kitty Wenckebach enabled the expansion of the kindergarten in Endresstrasse 113 (1st floor) to be carried out. From 1998 to 2001 the kindergarten in Marktgemeindegasse was rebuilt (expanded) and opened on September 29, 2001.

Pedagogy and teaching

As in all Waldorf schools, pedagogy is based on the epistemological methodology of Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy . The subject matter is completed in epochs , with eurythmy the children and young people are supported in their school development, the musical and sensual is promoted. The parents are much more involved in the school than in a public school and through regular, joint projects (parent work with or without children) they grow into the school and Waldorf education in the sense of a three-part school organism [child / parents / teacher] .

No state-recognized school leaving certificate ( Matura ) is offered. The 12th grade pupils usually attend one of the public schools in Mauer (e.g. Anton Krieger-Gasse) in the following year in order to acquire the Matura.
