Gabriel Fernández , full name Gabriel Matías Fernández Leites , (born May 13, 1994 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan football player .
Career
The 1.86-meter-tall offensive player Fernández has been in the ranks of the Uruguayan first division team Defensor since at least 2012 . There he was used three times in the Copa Libertadores Sub-20 (one goal) in 2012 , in which his club reached the final. He moved to league rivals Cerro Largo FC on loan in 2013 . The East Uruguayan club have made twelve appearances in the Primera División , in which Fernández scored two goals. For the 2013/14 season he returned to Defensor and completed four games (no goal) in the Primera División with the Montevideans. At Apertura 2014, he joined the city and league competitor Racing as part of another loan . In the 2014/15 season he was there 14 times (five goals) in the top Uruguayan division. During the 2015/16 season he was used in 16 other top division games (no goal). With eight goals scored in 15 league appearances, the 2016 season was his personally most successful to date.
In January 2018 he switched to the league rivals Club Atlético Peñarol , before Fernández exactly one year later, in January 2019, moved to Europe to the Spanish Primera División at Celta Vigo , but he was immediately loaned to Peñarol for half a year. Then Fernández went to Vigo , the capital of Galicia , but could not prevail. So he came to 20 games (1 goal), but was only in the starting line-up 5 times. This season, Celta Vigo played against relegation and managed to stay in relegation with 17th place.
