The Copa Libertadores 2010 , also known as the Copa Santander Libertadores due to the sponsorship of the Santander banking group , was the 51st edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. This season, 40 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL and from Mexico took part, as two Mexican clubs, which had to be eliminated from the competition in the previous season due to the influenza pandemic , automatically received two starting places in the round of 16. The tournament began on January 26th with the qualifying round and ended on July 18th with the final second leg.
Participating teams
The following teams will take part in the 2010 Copa Libertadores. Since Estudiantes de La Plata is automatically there as defending champion, Argentina was allowed to send six instead of the usual five starters to the tournament, with two having to qualify. Mexico, which actually belongs to CONCACAF , sent five teams to the tournament after being invited, two of which were directly qualified for the round of 16 because they had to withdraw in 2009 due to the influenza pandemic. The teams that still had to qualify for the main round are marked with a (Q) in the table.
mode
If there was a tie in the group stage, the goal difference was decisive for progress, then the number of goals scored, then the number of goals scored away . If these were also the same, the lot decided. In the knockout rounds, the away goal rule also applied in the event of a tie in points and goals. If their number was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately without extra time . Only in the final was there an extra time when the score was tied 90 minutes before the penalty shoot-out .
qualification
The first legs will take place from January 26 to 28, 2010 (local time), the second legs from February 2 to 10. The first-named team has home rights in the first leg, the second in the second leg.

Round of 16
The eight group winners and the six best runners-up qualified for the round of 16 because two teams from Mexico qualified directly for the round of 16, as they had to withdraw in 2009 due to the influenza pandemic.
The games were not drawn, but determined by a seeding list. The eight group winners were given start numbers 1 to 8 according to their ranking, so the best group winner received 1, the second best group winner received 2, etc. The eight runners-up were given start numbers 9 to 16. In the round of 16 then played 1 - 16, 2 - 15, 3 - 14…, so the best group first against the worst group second, etc. Guadalajara and San Luis received the 13 and 14, which they had in the previous year, before they had to withdraw from the competition.
