The Estadio Elías Aguirre is a stadium in the Peruvian city of Chiclayo . It has space for 24,500 spectators and is the home of the Juan Aurich club .

Construction of the stadium

The Estadio Elías Aguirre in Chiclayo , a city with around 630,000 inhabitants in northern Peru , was built in 1970 and opened that same year. Since then, the local club Juan Aurich has played its home games in the stadium. The club has never won the Peruvian soccer championship, the best placement in the Primera División was a second place in the 1968 season. Juan Aurich currently plays in the first Peruvian league in the upper table regions. In recent years, the club has also taken part in continental competitions several times, so that Estudiantes de La Plata from Argentina and Club Bolívar from Bolivia performed at the Estadio Elías Aguirre as part of the 2010 Copa Libertadores .

The Estadio Elías Aguirre was one of the venues for the Copa América in 2004 , which Peru was able to secure. Other stadiums in the tournament, which was won by Brazil , were for example the National Stadium in Lima , the Estadio Monumental de la UNSA in Arequipa and the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco . The stadium in Chiclayo was one of the smallest stadiums at the tournament, with space for 23,000 spectators. Before the South American Championship, the venue had been renovated by Juan Aurich, the capacity was increased from originally 20,000 spectator seats to 23,000 seats. During a further renovation in the following year, the capacity was increased again so that the stadium is now accessible for 24,500 spectators. The 2004 Copa America played five games at the Estadio Elías Aguirre in Chiclayo, including the quarter-final between Peru and Argentina , which Argentina won 1-0 with a goal from Carlos Tévez . In 2005, the U-17 World Cup took place in Peru . Once again the stadium was one of the venues. The tournament played six games in Chiclayo, including a semi-final game that Mexico's juniors won 4-0 against the Netherlands . A little later, Mexico also won the final at the Estadio Nacional in Lima 3-0 against Brazil.
