The Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega is a football stadium in the Peruvian city of Cusco . It has space for 42,056 spectators in the open air and is the home ground of the football clubs Club Sportivo Cienciano and Real Garcilaso .
history
The Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega was built in 1950. It is named after Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616), a Peruvian writer and chronicler of the history of the Incas and the conquest of Peru by the Spaniards. At that time the capacity was still 30,000 places. Club Sportivo Cienciano has been part of the club since 1950, although it has never been able to become Peruvian champion , but won the 2003 Copa Sudamericana in the final against CA Boca Juniors from Argentina . In addition, the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega is the home of Deportivo Garcilaso , who plays in a lower league.
On the occasion of the Copa America 2004 , which Peru was able to secure, the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega was rebuilt and the capacity increased to 42,056 spectators. For the renovation, the government of Peru provided large amounts of money to renovate the outdated stadium. At this Copa America, the game for third place between Colombia and Uruguay , which the Uruguayans won 2-1, took place in Cusco.
