The Estadio Monumental de la UNSA is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Peruvian city of Arequipa . It has space for 40,217 spectators and serves as the home of the FBC Melgar association .

history

The Estadio Monumental de la UNSA was built between 1991 and 1993. After it opened in 1993, it was initially used by the National University of St. Augustin in Arequipa as a stadium for competitions. It was not until 1995 that the first professional football game took place in the Estadio Monumental de la UNSA, which is also named after the nearby university. Here the future tenant of the stadium, the club FBC Melgar, and Alianza Lima faced each other. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. Two years later, the stadium hosted the 1997 Bolivarian Games.

In 2003 the Estadio Monumental de la UNSA hosted the final of the Copa Sudamericana , the second most important continental competition in South America after the Copa Libertadores . Club Sportivo Cienciano from Cusco beat CA River Plate from Argentina 1-0 in the Arequipa final after the first leg in Buenos Aires ended 3-3. The game only took place here because Cienciano's home stadium, the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega , was under renovation. A year later, the Estadio Monumental de la UNSA was one of the venues for the Copa America , which Peru was able to secure. The tournament was played five games in Arequipa. For the Copa América, the stadium's audience capacity was increased to over 60,000 in order to cope with the enormous crowd. After the end of the tournament, the capacity was reduced to the 40,217 places still valid today.
