The 1989 Copa Libertadores was the 30th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part. The national champions of the CONMEBOL countries and the runners-up took part. Defending champion Nacional Montevideo completed the field of participants . The tournament began on February 12 and ended on May 31, 1989 with the final second leg. The Colombian representative Atlético Nacional won the final against Club Olimpia and thus the Copa Libertadores for the first time .
