He also took part in the Copa America in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995 , in which he and his team took third place three times.

Coaching career

After his active career, Álvarez was only a spectator for a while. It wasn't until 2008 that he intervened again in the football business after he was introduced as the new technology coach by Deportivo Pereira . In 2008 he joined his former club Independiente Medellín as an assistant coach , where he worked for Santiago Escobar . After a series of bad results, Escobar was sacked and Álvarez took over as head coach. Right away he won the championship in the Torneo Finalización with his club . In May 2010 he moved to the coaching staff of Hernán Darío Gómez , who was presented at the same time as the new coach of the Colombian national team . Together they led the team at the 2011 Copa America , where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Peru . After a scandal involving national coach Gómez in August 2011, Álvarez became the new head coach of the Colombian selection in September of that year. After two games, he was dismissed on December 13, 2011 after a draw and a defeat.

In July 2012, Álvarez became the coach of the Colombian first division club Itagüí FC . After finishing fourth in the Torneo Finalización , which was good for the club , Leonel Álvarez was signed by Deportivo Cali in January 2013 . In the back series he was able to lead the club in the championship final, which was lost to Atlético Nacional . After winning the Superliga de Colombia in January 2014, the club got off to a very bad start in the first half of the 2014 season. Therefore, Álvarez was fired in February 2014.

Leonel Álvarez has been coach of Independiente Medellín again since May 2015. With his new club he was able to directly reach the final of the Colombian championship, which was lost to Deportivo Cali.
