Jorge Luis Pinto Afanador (born December 16, 1952 in San Gil ) is a Colombian football coach .

education

Pinto was never a national player or a professional footballer himself, but entered the coaching profession on an academic path: he studied sports science in Colombia, Brazil and Germany. During his studies in Cologne he was a regular visitor to the training sessions of 1. FC Köln , in which he analyzed the tactics of the then coach Rinus Michels .

Coaching career

From the mid-1980s, Pinto coached various club teams, first in his native Colombia, later also in Peru and Costa Rica, where he won his first championship titles with Alianza Lima and LD Alajuelense . From 2004 to 2005 Pinto looked after the national team of Costa Rica . After he was released shortly before the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he became the new coach at the Colombian club Cúcuta Deportivo . There he won the only championship to date with the club. In 2007 he became the new coach of the Colombian national team . With Colombia he failed in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

After further coaching positions at clubs in Ecuador and Venezuela, he coached the national team of Costa Rica again from 2011. He won the Copa Centroamericana 2013 and qualified with the Central Americans for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Thus, after two failed attempts in 2014, he came to his first World Cup participation. The three ex-world champions Uruguay , Italy and England were drawn to his team in group D. Costa Rica was considered an outsider. In the first group game, the Pinto team defeated Uruguay 3-1, in the second game Italy 1-0. In the last game, a 0-0 victory against England was enough for Costa Rica to win the group and advance to the round of 16. There they defeated Greece after a 1-1 draw after extra time on penalties 5-3 and made it to the quarter-finals for the first time. There they were defeated by the Netherlands 3-4 on penalties. On July 25, 2014, it was announced that Pinto could not come to an agreement with the Costa Rican Football Association about a contract extension. The officials did not give him a free hand in choosing his employees, which is why he resigned from his position. On December 7, 2014, he was announced as the new national coach of Honduras. From 2018 to 2019 he was the coach of the Colombian club Millonarios FC. Since July 2020, Pinto has been the head coach of the national team of the United Arab Emirates.
