The Club Deportivo El Nacional (dt. Sports Club The National ) is a football club from Quito in Ecuador . El Nacional is named because it belongs to the Ecuadorian military and because the players are all Ecuadorian nationals. Therefore, the team is nicknamed Puros Criollos (German. Real Criollos / Creoles ) and El Equipo Militar (German. The military team ). The three club colors red, light blue and dark blue represent the three armed forces of Ecuador. The team logo contains yellow as the third color instead of light blue. The club is not to be confused with the Club Nacional from the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

Just like Deportivo Quito , the professional team plays their home games in the Atahualpa national stadium . At national level, El Nacional is, together with Barcelona SC Guayaquil, the team with the most championship titles (namely 13). As the only team El Nacional won the championship three times in a row (1976-1988 and 1982-1984). Hence the self-titling as Bi-Tri-Campeón comes from. In 1985, the team reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, which were held in two groups of three teams each . There they were eliminated from Colombia as runners-up behind América de Cali .
