The Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Ecuadorian capital Quito . It offers 35,724 places.

history

The sports facility is named after the Inca ruler Atahualpa . It was opened in 1951 after a three-year construction phase and renovated in 1973 and 1977. The renovation work has resulted in the capacity being reduced from the original 40,958 or 39,816 spaces.

The location of the stadium at an altitude of 2,782 m is remarkable. The facility is located at the intersection of Avenida 6 de Diciembre and Avenida Naciones Unidas in Quito, about seven kilometers north of the historic old town.

Several capital city clubs use or used the stadium as a home ground, such as Deportivo Quito , Universidad Católica del Ecuador and the CD El Nacional . The Ecuadorian national team also plays their home games at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa.
