Kamariotissa ( Greek Καμαριώτισσα [ kamaˈrjɔtisa ] ( f. Sg. )) Is the port city of the Greek island of Samothrace and lies in a westerly direction in a bay not far from Akrotiri Makrivrachos, a narrow tongue of land that protrudes about 500 meters into the sea. A wind power plant for generating electricity was built here in the mid-1990s, which is now operated by PPC Renewables SA, a subsidiary of the state energy supplier DEI (ΔΕΗ) . However, this was dismantled and sold a few years ago. The construction of a new wind farm on the south side of the island is now under discussion.

history

Before that, the port near Paleopoli, about 6 km north, was considered an important port on the island, which, however, repeatedly fell victim to pirates and the power of nature. Today there is only an old, broken footbridge left. Kamariotissa only had a few hundred inhabitants at the end of the 19th century, mostly fishermen and traders. Due to the favorable location, more and more fishing boats moored here at the then small port. In the following decades (especially during the 1990s) the port was expanded to accommodate several boats and larger ships.

economy

The port of Kamariótissa

Through the further expansion of the port, favored by the trade and the difficult to get started tourism, Kamariotissa gained more and more importance as a port city. An increasing economic growth benefited the entire island inhabitants, who are mainly dependent on tourism during the summer months, due to the constant expansion. In recent years, in the course of growth, important authorities such as the police, post office and also banks have moved from the capital Samothraki ("Chora"), 6 km away, to Kamariotissa. The advantages are shorter trade routes, better accessibility and citizen service, also for increasing tourism. The other side of the coin: the traditional, picturesque capital Samothraki ("Chora") is becoming less and less important as an administrative center. Most recently, a new school building was erected outside Kamariotissa in the direction of Chora, as the old building was classified as unsuitable due to its structural substance. A few years ago there were considerations to build an airport south of Kamariotissa. However, these plans were discarded due to the inefficiency and the unfavorable location (strong winds, runway too short). There is only one helipad near Alonia.

traffic

There are regular ferry connections between Samothraki and Alexandroupoli . Buses of the regional bus company KTEL Evrou run from Kamariotissa to other places on the island.
