Sociedad Anónima Deportiva América , better known as América de Cali , is a Colombian football club based in Cali . The club is 14-time champion in the country, played in the second division for five years and was promoted back to the first division on November 27, 2016 . The association, founded on February 13, 1927, is called Los diablos rojos because of its coat of arms, which adorns a red devil . This logo has been discontinued since the team was founded, but has been reintroduced since 1997 as the evil nature of the devil is only seen figuratively in Colombia these days.

history

América de Cali is considered the unlucky person of the Copa Libertadores . The club reached the final of the competition four times, but lost each time: even three times in a row between 1985 and 1987 and 1996.

América de Cali received money from members of the Cali cartel , which was the leader in exporting cocaine to the United States , at least in the 1970s and 1980s . In October 2003, the club was placed on the so-called Clinton List as part of a ring of deck companies , which means that US citizens and companies under Executive Order 12978 are instructed not to do business with the club.

In 2011, the club was relegated to the Categoría Primera B for the first time after losing the relegation to Patriotas on penalties. In the first three seasons in the second division, the club was one of the strongest teams, but failed in each promotion, with America barely reached the final round in the back series in 2014 and was last in its group. Also in the special promotion round for traditional clubs of the second division in January 2015, the club missed promotion.

In the 2015 season , America was able to reach the final round again, but missed promotion to Atlético Bucaramanga in his group . In the following season, the club managed a 2-1 win in their last game against Deportes Quindío and rose again to the top division after five years. Subsequently, America was able to win the final against Tigres FC and became second division champions.

In the first half of the series after promotion, America reached the semi-finals in 2017 , which were lost to local rivals Deportivo Cali . In the back series América was able to prevent relegation and also reached the semi-finals again, which was lost to Millonarios FC . In the 2018 season, America clearly missed the finals in both half-series, but was also not involved in the relegation battle.

In the Apertura 2019 , America moved into the final round in fourth place, but was unable to qualify for the final. In June 2019 Alexandre Guimarães was introduced as the new trainer.
