The Club Deportivo Atlético Huila is a Colombian football club from the city of Neiva , who is currently in the Colombian first division play. Atlético Huila is nicknamed Los Opitas .

The two biggest successes in the club's history so far have been the second division championships in 1992 and 1997, as well as two runner-up championships in the first division in 2007 and 2009 .

Atlético Huila has a women's team that won both the Colombian championship and the Copa Libertadores in 2018 .

history

Atlético Huila was founded in 1989. For the first edition of the second Colombian league , a professional team was set up in 1991, which achieved the first promotion to the first division with the championship in 1992 . The first coach was Víctor Quiñónez .

From 1993 to 1996, the club played until the first and only relegation in the first division. In the second division, Atlético Huila was able to get promoted straight away and has since played in the first division again.

In 1999 the club played the only time in the Copa Conmebol , but was eliminated in the first round. Atlético Huila 2010 qualified for the Copa Sudamericana and reached the second round there.

In the Hinserie 2015 Atlético Huila reached the first place in the league phase, but then retired in the quarter-finals against Deportes Tolima . The Finalización, however, was much worse and the club landed in 18th place.

In the 2016 season , Huila clearly failed to make it into the final round in both half-series and ended the league phase in 16th place in the table.

For the 2017 season, the Argentine Jorge Vivaldo was signed as the new coach. After a weak streak in 2017 , Vivaldo was dismissed and instead the Argentine Néstor Craviotto was committed. The return series went better for Atlético Huila, but the entry into the final round was missed by one point in tenth place.

In January 2018, DIMAYOR Atlético Huila banned the use of the stadium in Neiva for football matches in the first division as long as the required standards were not met. The club therefore initially moved to Ibagué . A short time later, Atlético Huila was able to return after the most important security-related changes had been made. The league phase of Apertura 2018 closed Huila in fourth place and made it to the semi-finals, where the club was eliminated by Atlético Nacional . After a bad start to the return series, Néstor Craviotto was sacked. He was followed by Dayron Pérez as the new head coach. This was able to prevent relegation in 17th place. The coach's contract was then extended for the 2019 season. However, Pérez resigned in March. Luis Fernando Herrera was hired as his successor . Huila finished the Apertura 2019 in 18th place.

rivalry

There is a special rivalry with the Deportes Tolima association . The derby is known as the Clásico del Tolima Grande .

Stadion

Atlético Huila plays its home games at the Estadio Guillermo Plazas Alcid . The stadium was built in 1980 and has a capacity of around 27,000 seats.

During renovation work there was an accident on the stadium construction site in August 2016. When part of the west stand collapsed, four people died and ten others were injured.
