history
Neiva was founded in 1539 by Juan de Cabrera , one of the captains of Sebastián de Belalcázar's expedition, near what is now Campoalegre . It was created on an exploration trip in connection with the search for the legendary El Dorado , as well as Popayán, west of the Central Cordillera . Eleven years after its founding, the city was destroyed in clashes between Spaniards and indigenous peoples and rebuilt by Juan Alonso on the site of today's Villavieja, but shortly afterwards destroyed again by the Pijaos . In its current location, Neiva was founded in 1612 by Diego de Ospina y Medinilla . This point of view was also contested, but held out. Neiva had about 3,000 inhabitants in 1763. The city played an active role in the Comuneros uprising in New Granada in 1789 . After independence, the province of Neiva was assigned to the department of Cundinamarca . From 1861 Neiva was part of the newly founded state of Tolima , of which it was the capital for a long time. During the War of the Thousand Days , which lasted from 1899 to 1902, Neiva was the site of the Battle of Matamundo . After the civil war, the Departamento del Huila was founded, of which Neiva became the capital. The region around Neiva was badly affected by La Violencia from 1948 to 1958. Many buildings were destroyed in an earthquake in 1967. The Neiva diocese was founded in 1972.
