Riohacha is located in Colombia and is the capital and a municipality ( municipio ) of the northernmost Colombian department of La Guajira .

geography

Riohacha is located directly on the Colombian Caribbean coast . The municipality borders on Albania , Manaure and Maicao to the east, Dibulla to the west and Hatonuevo , Barrancas , Fonseca , Distracción and San Juan del Cesar to the south .

population

The municipality of Riohacha has 295,984 inhabitants, of which 252,428 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The city was founded by Nikolaus Federmann in 1536 and made the capital of the province within the viceroyalty of New Granada in 1544 . The theory that the city was founded by Nikolaus Federmann has been reviewed and rejected by historians, as Federmann never reached the place where Riohacha is located today.

Since 1952 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Riohacha .

economy

Riohacha is right by the sea. The fishing is one of the main sources of income of the regional economy. There are submarine natural gas deposits off the coast; therefore the port has had a natural gas terminal for several years . Another economic factor also results from the geographic location of the city: the proximity to the Venezuelan border ensures lively, sometimes illegal import and export traffic overland via the border town of Maicao .
