Hatonuevo is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Hatonuevo is close to the border with Venezuela .

geography

Hatonuevo is located at an altitude of about 225 meters near the Venezuelan border in the south of the La Guajira department. The municipality is located in the Serranía del Perijá , a northern extension of the Andes . Hatonuevo also has a share in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta . In addition, the Río Ranchería flows through the municipality. The municipality borders Riohacha and Albania to the north, Barrancas to the south and west and Venezuela and Albania to the east .

population

The municipality of Hatonuevo has 28,671 inhabitants, of which 16,255 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). Much of the community's population are Wayúu indigenous people .

history

Hatonuevo was founded in 1840 by Blas Amaya on the two streams El Pozo and Gritador . From 1994 to 1998 and then again since 1999 Hatonuevo has the status of a municipality.
