Barrancas is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Barrancas is close to the border with Venezuela .

geography

Barrancas is located at an altitude of about 40 meters near the Venezuelan border in the south of the La Guajira department. The municipality is located in the valley of the Ranchería River . The municipality borders Hatonuevo to the north, Riohacha and Fonseca to the west, Fonseca to the south and Venezuela to the east .

population

The municipality of Barrancas has 37,554 inhabitants, of which 19,562 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Barrancas was founded in 1664 and initially belonged to the sphere of influence of Valledupar . Soon, however, mainly trade relations with Riohacha were established. Initially the place was known as San José de los Barrancos . There was a parish in Barrancas since 1672 and Barrancas has been a parish since 1892. At first it belonged to the Departamento del Magdalena Grande , from 1954 to the Intendencia de la Guajira , which became a department in 1965.

economy

The main industry in Barrancas is mining . Part of the El Cerrejón coal mine is located in the municipality . Trade with the cities of Riohacha and Maicao , but also with Santa Marta and Barranquilla, is of particular importance for the economy .
