Manaure is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia .
geography
Manaure is located on the Colombian Caribbean coast in the north of the La Guajira department, about 63 kilometers northeast of Riohacha . The municipality borders the Caribbean Sea to the north, Riohacha to the southwest, Maicao to the south and Uribia to the east .
population
The municipality of Manaure has 120,417 inhabitants, of which 52,329 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The city goes back to a settlement of nomadic Wayúu . The first non-indigenous settlement can be traced back to the year 1723. Manaure has had parish status since 1974.
economy
The most important industries in Manaures are the extraction of natural gas and salt production . The region's natural gas reserves are the largest in Colombia. The marine salt extraction plants are the most important in the country. In addition, trade plays a certain role.
