Fonseca is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Fonseca is close to the border with Venezuela .

geography

Fonseca is located at an altitude of approximately 11 meters near the Venezuelan border in the south of the La Guajira department . The municipality is located in the valley of the Ranchería River between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá . The municipality is bordered to the north by Riohacha and Barrancas , to the southwest by San Juan del Cesar , to the northwest by Distracción and to the east by Venezuela .

The municipality of Fonseca has 35,205 inhabitants, of which 23,238 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

There are several variations on the history of the founding of Fonseca. After the first, Fonseca was founded around 1700 by Agustín Fonseca and José Agustín Parodi on the Río Ranchería . According to another, the colonization was a slow colonization process.

Fonseca belonged to the province of Santa Marta from 1773. Fonseca has been a municipality since 1829 and belongs to the Guajira.
