Maicao is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Maicao is on the border with Venezuela .

The word Maicao comes from the Wayuu language, Maiko'u [maíkōu] (Maiki: corn and o'uu: eye), and means corn eye.

Maicao was founded on June 29, 1926 by Rodolfo Morales and Tomás Cúrvelo Iguarán in the middle of the Wayúu territory.

geography

Maicao is located at an altitude of about 50 meters near the Colombian Caribbean coast. The municipality borders Uribia and Manaure to the north, Venezuela to the south and east and Albania and Riohacha to the west .

population

The municipality of Maicao has 166,603 inhabitants, 114,400 of whom live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

Demographics

A large part of the population of Maicao belongs to the indigenous peoples of the Wayúu and Zenú . Many descendants of Arab immigrants also live in the region . Maicao has the third largest mosque in South America, the Omar Ibn Al-Jattab mosque .

economy

Maicao is a duty-free zone and the main industry is trade . The city is an economic bridge between Colombia and Venezuela.
