Zenu

The Zenú are an Indian people in Colombia . They live in San Andrés de Sotavento and Tuchín in the department of Córdoba and in the sub-region of Urabá Antioqueño in the department of Antioquia . Smaller settlements can be found in Chocó , Sucre and in the south of Bolívar . The population includes 33,910 people who live in an area of ​​16,796 hectares.

Their own language died out due to strong acculturation during the colonial period. Instead, the Zenú use the Spanish language widely spoken in Latin America .

According to the 1991 constitution, the Zenú are represented by Governor Israel Aguilar (as of September 2011).

Conflicts

Since November 2009 the Águilas Negras , one of the demobilized paramilitary groups, “ bandes criminales ” (Spanish for “ criminal gang ”; short: “ Bacrim ”) has considered all Zenú tribal chiefs as a military target. According to a statement by Governor Israel Aguilar, 5 officials and 34 members of the Zenú have since been murdered.
