San Andrés de Sotavento is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba in Colombia .

San Andrés de Sotavento is located in the east of Córdoba , about 100 km from Montería . The municipality borders in the north on Tuchín and Sincelejo in the Departamento de Sucre , in the east on Chinú and Sampués in Sucre, in the south on Chinú and Ciénaga de Oro and in the west on Chimá and Tuchín.

history

In the area of ​​today's San Andrés de Sotavento lived the indigenous people of the Zenú before the arrival of the Spaniards . As a Spanish settlement, San Andrés de Sotavento was founded in 1600 under the name San Andrés de Pichirroy, although initially most of the inhabitants were still indigenous. The Resguardo Indígena de San Andrés de Sotavento reserve has existed since 1773 . A large group of Zenú still live in the municipality today. In 2007, Tuchín was separated from the municipality of San Andrés de Sotavento and declared an independent municipality.
