Chinu is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba in Colombia .

geography

Chinú is located in the Sabanas sub- region in Córdoba at an altitude of 100 m above sea level. NN , 94 km from Montería and 21 km from Sincelejo . The municipality borders in the north with Sampués and El Roble in the Departamento de Sucre , in the south with Sahagún , in the west with San Andrés de Sotavento and Ciénaga de Oro and in the east with San Benito Abad , Caimito and La Unión in Sucre.

The municipality of Chinú has 50,313 inhabitants, of which 25,210 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Zenú lived in what is now Chinú . The first Spanish expedition reached the region around 1500. In the following years the Spaniards fought the Zenú and almost completely destroyed their culture. The economic activities of the Spaniards in the region were initially limited to the search for gold and isolated estates. The place Chinú itself was an indigenous village, which was discovered in 1534 by Pedro and Alonso de Heredia and re-founded.

economy

The main industry of Chinú is agriculture , with the cultivation of yams and sesame predominantly. The proximity to Sincelejo , the capital of Sucre, with which there is a lively exchange, is of economic importance for the municipality .
