San Jerónimo de Montería , just called Montería for short , is a Colombian municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Córdoba , of which it is also the capital.
geography
Montería is located on the Río Sinú , about 50 kilometers from the Caribbean Sea . The municipality borders Cereté , Puerto Escondido and San Pelayo in the north, San Carlos and Planeta Rica in the east, Tierralta and Valencia in the south and Arboletes and San Pedro de Urabá in Antioquia as well as Canalete , Puerto Escondido and Los Córdobas in the west .

The municipality of Montería has 465,999 inhabitants, of which 362,757 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The area was initially settled by the Zenú , who lived on the banks of the Río Sinú (Finzenú), the Río San Jorge (Panzenú) and the Río Nechí (Zenúfana).
The city of Montería was officially founded by Antonio de la Torre y Miranda in May 1777.
According to newspaper reports, residents in all districts of the city have been terrorized by criminal gangs for years, and many are killed. According to the city's mayor, Marcos Daniel Pineda García, Monteria has recently become the center of financial transactions for drug gangs and has a high murder rate.
Infrastructure
The Universidad de Córdoba and the Universidad del Sinú have their headquarters in Montería . In addition, other universities have branches in Montería
Montería has Los Garzones Airport .
The diocese of Montería has its seat in the city. The Cathedral of San Jerónimo, one of the sights of Monteria, was built in the Spanish colonial style.
Sports
The Leones de Montería (Montería Lions), the local baseball club , plays in the Liga Colombiana de Béisbol Profesional , the highest league in Colombia. Their home stadium is the Estadio 18 de Junio , which has a capacity of 4,500 people.
The soccer club Jaguares de Córdoba , which was founded in 2012 and has played in the Categoría Primera A , the highest Colombian league , since 2015 , is also based in Montería . The club plays its home games at the Estadio Jaraguay . Jaguares de Córdoba is the third club from Córdoba to participate in Colombian professional football. The two short-lived clubs Córdoba FC (2006-2008) and Atlético Córdoba (1997-1999) had their headquarters in the neighboring town of Cereté .
