Sincelejo is the capital and a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .
The word Sincelejo is based on the name of the indigenous chief Cincel (Chinchelejo), who ruled the region when the Spaniards arrived.
Sincelejo is the seat of the diocese of Sincelejo .

Sincelejo is located at an altitude of about 213 meters near the Colombian Caribbean coast. Sincelejo borders in the north on Tolú and Tolú Viejo , in the south on Sampués and San Andrés de Sotavento and Tuchín in the department of Córdoba , in the east on Corozal and Morroa and in the west on San Antonio de Palmito and Tolú.

The municipality of Sincelejo has 290,667 inhabitants, of which 273,251 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The area was inhabited by the Toace indigenous people even before the arrival of the Spaniards . Sincelejo was officially founded by the Spanish as San Francisco de Asís de Sincelejo on April 4, 1536 by Antonio De la Torre y Miranda.
Sports
The football clubs Real Sincelejo , Expreso Rojo , Atlético de la Sabana and Sucre FC were based in Sincelejo . Real Sincelejo played in the Colombian second division from 2003 to 2004, Atlético de la Sabana from 2009 to 2010 and Sucre FC in 2012 . Expreso Rojo played the 2005 season in Sincelejo, but then moved back to Cartagena and then to Cundinamarca . Sucre FC moved to Montería in 2013 and was renamed Jaguares de Córdoba . The other two clubs disbanded and sold their starting rights. All clubs played their home games at the Estadio Arturo Cumplido Sierra .
