Location of Boyacá in Colombia

The Departamento de Boyacá is a province in northeast Colombia .

It borders the country of Venezuela in the extreme northeast . It shares the other borders (clockwise) with the Departamentos del Arauca , de Casanare , Cundinamarca , Antioquia , Santander and Norte de Santander . The capital of Boyacá is Tunja with about 150,000 inhabitants.

The second important city is Duitama (called the "Pearl of Boyacá"), which over the years has developed into an important industrial center.

In agriculture , mainly potatoes , wheat , vegetables , agaves , coffee , tobacco and fruits are grown. Boyacá is the main producer of emeralds . In the industry, iron processing, cement and beverage production dominate.

The Puente de Boyacá , site of the Battle of Boyacá , is relevant for tourism ; the Laguna de Tota (Lake Tota) and the thermal baths of Paipa . One of the most beautiful colonial cities in Colombia is also located in the Department de Boyacá: Villa de Leyva .
