Sogamoso is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Boyacá in Colombia . It is the third largest city in the department after Tunja and Duitama . Together with Duitama, Sogamoso is the seat of the diocese of Duitama-Sogamoso .
Before the arrival of the conquistadors, the city could be considered "Rome of the Chibcha people ".

Sogamoso has an extension of 208 km² and lies at 2569 m in the eastern cordillera of the Andes . The city is located about 210 kilometers northeast of Bogotá and 80 kilometers east of Tunja. Sogamoso has an average annual temperature of 17 ° C. The municipality is located at an altitude between 2500 and 4000 m . The municipality borders on Nobsa and Tópaga in the north, Tópaga, Monguí and Aquitania in the east, Aquitania, Cuítiva and Iza in the south and Tibasosa , Firavitoba and Iza in the west .

history
The territory of the municipality of Sogamoso was before the arrival of the Spaniards from the indigenous people of the Muisca , to the group of Chibcha included colonized. Today's city goes back to a Muisca settlement. Sogamoso was raised to the status of a Villa Republicana (Republican city) in 1810 .
