history

The present city is originally named after the Kaziken Tundama . In the course of time the name changed to Duitama. The original name still refers to the province in which Duitama is located. During the struggle of the conquistadors against the unruly tundama in 1539, the indigenous Muisca population was severely decimated. The then fallow , fertile areas were immediately cultivated by the Spanish conquerors. It was these who urbanized the settlement. In 1556 the first missionaries of the Dominican Order came to the place and made it a training center until the place was elevated to a parish in 1775 . On September 27, 1819 , the place, at the behest of Simón Bolívar , was raised to the city.

flag

Flag of Duitamas

The three-striped flag of Duitamas was established in 1961 by the Acuerdo Municipal 022 . The green stripe should represent the devotion of the people in the fight for their freedom as well as the agriculturally favorable location. The black ribbon is intended to commemorate the indigenous people who were oppressed and enslaved by the Spaniards during the conquest . Last but not least, red represents the fearlessness and heroism of the indigenous people in war.
